The two most famous and powerful former rulers in the European continent are perhaps Julius Caesar and
Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Both of these rulers played important parts in the history of Europe. Their names and influence echo through time. However, the fame of these two historical and political figures is pale in comparison to the fame of the man from Nazareth.
Jesus of Nazareth may had been just an ordinary religious teacher and a minor political nuisance during the Roman Empire, but his influence today is far greater than the combined influence of all rulers in history. Christianity, as embodied by the Holy Roman Apostolic and Catholic Church, has shaped and continue to shape the course of
European history. Christianity has replaced the Roman Empire as a world power.
The influence of Christianity in Italy is physically evident in the grand cathedrals and basilicas as well as in the works of arts. Christian faith is also expressed in the various
religious festivals that dominate the Italian calendar. Italian Christianity is both outward and inward expression of faith. The Catholic Church continues to be both a political and cultural force in Italy.
