
Meals and the dining customs in Italy are very different compared to those in other western countries. The fist thing one will notice is the time of the meal. Most meals start very late in the summer: summer starts after 1 in the afternoon and dinner starts past 8 in the evening.
The next thing one will notice is the traditional five sections of the Italian menu (when one dines in a ristorante). The appetizers or the antipasti are served before the main courses. Then there are two courses - primo and secondo. The first one is soup, pasta or rice dishes, while the second course is usually poultry, meat or
fish. The side dishes or the contorni is ordered with the main course. This could be potato, insalata (salad) or vegetable (verdura). The dessert or dolce can be either cheese or fruit which will be offered to you after the full meal.
Wine or mineral water is usually the beverage of choice for most Italians to complement their meals.
